The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opens to the public. Development of a national cultural center began under President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958. Two months after President Kennedy’s assassination, the center was designated as a “living memorial” to President Kennedy and subsequently renamed.
