Wooden "SHAFT" sign from the Texas School Book Depository
This wooden sign saying "SHAFT" is from one of the floors of the Texas School Book Depository building, likely hung near the freight elevators on the north side of the building. It was recovered during renovations of the building after Dallas County purchased the former Texas School Book Depository building in 1977.

A small passenger elevator on the east side of the building only went up to the fourth floor and was primarily used by office personnel. This "SHAFT" sign from one of the floors was likely hung near the two freight elevators on the north wall of the building. One elevator was hydraulic and the other was manual, and both were used by Depository employees to move inventory from the upper floors of the building to the ground floor packing room. A similar wooden sign with white letters reading "Shaft Way" can be seen in an FBI photograph taken on the first floor. The sign, apparently not in use at the time, is seen upside down and leaning against a first-floor wall outside of the Domino Room on the north side of the first floor. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
