Martha Howard Oral History

Videotaped oral history interview with Martha Howard. Howard and her husband, the late Dr. Herbert R. Howard, observed the Kennedy motorcade on Lemmon Avenue before proceeding to the Dallas Trade Mart luncheon. Dr. Howard held a special prayer service on Saturday, November 23, at the Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas and then delivered a powerful sermon on Sunday. Both services were recorded and later donated to The Sixth Floor Museum. Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on January 22, 2004 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-two minutes long.

Park Cities Baptist Church started in Dallas in 1939, originally located on Lovers Lane. The church moved to a new building on Northwest Highway in 1954, where it remains to the present day. Dr. Herbert Roscoe Howard (1917-1985) served as senior minister at the church for nearly thirty years, from 1948 to 1976. Martha Howard taught Sunday School at Park Cities Baptist Church for more than sixty-five years. - Stephen Fagin, Curator

The Museum's Park Cities Baptist Church Collection (2009.037) includes the original reel-to-reel audio tapes discussed during this interview, containing sermons delivered by the late Dr. Herbert R. Howard on November 23 and 24, 1963. The collection also includes copies of the Park Cities Baptist Church program for services on Sunday, November 24, 1963. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
