At the age of 92, Lee R. Slaughter Jr. passed away on November 20, 2023, two days prior to the 60th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination. The company founded by his late father, Slaughter Industries, was at one time the largest supplier of lumber and building materials to commercial builders in the United States. Slaughter's company was involved in a number of significant local building projects, including NorthPark mall and additions to Southern Methodist University. After Slaughter sold the company to International Paper Co. in 1979, he founded a private merchant bank, Kahala Investments. In addition to his service on the Dallas Citizens Council, Slaughter was a member of the Highland Park Independent School Board for nine years and also served one term as chair of The Salvation Army's board of directors. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
