"John Fitzgerald Kennedy: The Last Full Measure," National Geographic, 1964

Reprinted special edition of National Geographic from the March 1964 issue of the magazine, titled "The Last Full Measure: The World Pays Tribute to President Kennedy," written by Melville Bell Grosvenor, the president and editor of the National Geographic Society, along with other staff. Cover of magazine has full-color image of President John F. Kennedy lying in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda surrounded by a crowd of people that includes military personnel and members of the press. Jacqueline and Caroline Kennedy stand near the bier on which the flag-draped casket rests. This image wraps over the spine onto the back of the magazine. "The Last Full Measure" was originally published in the full issue of National Geographic, volume 125, number 3. This reprinted smaller issue is copyrighted 1964 by National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. This article was originally printed on pages 307 through 355 and the pages are numbered the same in this special reprinted edition of the magazine.The magazine features many full-color images taken November 23-25, 1963. A large color photographic image of the interior of St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, D.C., shows the church full of mourners and President Kennedy's casket placed near the front; image was taken by Fred Maroon and is on pages 342 to 343. Page 343 also shows a smaller photographic image of Cardinal Cushing wiping away tears; image taken by Joe Heiberger of The Washington Post.These images are not available online larger than a thumbnail to protect the copyright of their creator(s).
