Image of a crowd outside the Texas School Book Depository

Original 35mm black and white negative taken by Dallas Times Herald staff photographer William Allen Friday afternoon after the assassination - between 12:30 and 1 p.m. This image shows a crowd gathered in front of the Texas School Book Depository. Police officers and police motorcycles appear in the midst of bystanders around the southeast corner of the building; the crowd has spilled off the sidewalk into the intersection of Houston and Elm streets. Signs listing the publishers who leased space in the building can be seen on the south and east sides of the building's corner.

Curatorial Note:

On the corner of the building is a sign that lists all of the publishing companies that had offices in the Texas School Book Depository building. When Oliver Stone came to Dallas to shoot his movie "JFK" his set designers created similar signs, but with the names of the publishers a few letters off from the ones visible in this photograph. The Museum has some of the signs and props from the movie "JFK" in its collections. - Lindsey Richardson, Curator of Collections
