George Charlton Oral History

Videotaped oral history interview with George Charlton. An award-winning community leader in the arts, Charlton played a key role in the establishment of the Dallas Museum of Art at its current location in downtown Dallas. From 1960 to 1987, Charlton was married to Margaret Jonsson, daughter of Dallas mayor J. Erik Jonsson. Charlton recalled spending time with his father-in-law during the weekend of the Kennedy assassination. Interview conducted at Mr. Charlton's home in Dallas on July 18, 2001 by Bob Porter and Stephen Fagin. The interview is forty-nine minutes long.

George Charlton passed away on October 26, 2012. He first joined the Dallas Museum of Art board of trustees in 1968 and later served as president of the board. He was instrumental in a decade-long effort, from 1974 to 1984, to move the Dallas Museum of Art from its longtime home at Fair Park to a much larger location downtown as the first institution in what would become the Dallas Arts District. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
