Investigations

Although officially under the jurisdiction of the Dallas Police Department, the extensive investigation into the assassination of President Kennedy ultimately involved a number of federal agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Secret Service. Jack Ruby’s murder of Lee Harvey Oswald also prompted local and national investigations, with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office leading the prosecution of Ruby during his trial. The Warren Commission in 1964 and the House Select Committee on Assassinations in the 1970s were among the official government investigations that explored the Kennedy assassination, while independent researchers have continued to study the subject in detail for decades.
