1960 Campaign

The 1960 presidential campaigns of Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon led to one of the closest elections in American history. Televised presidential debates, a first in 1960, demonstrated Senator Kennedy’s polished and confident on-screen demeanor. Voters considered the experience of Richard Nixon’s eight years as vice president versus the heroism demonstrated by John F. Kennedy as a PT boat captain during World War II. The race was extremely close, and Kennedy was elected to the presidency with a lead of just 0.16% of the United States popular vote and 84 electoral votes.
