Superman Comes to the Supermarket: An Examination of Norman Mailer’s 1960 Kennedy Campaign Essay

October 29, 2015 | 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

| $5 – $15

The late Norman Mailer saw in John F. Kennedy, “a hero [who could] capture the secret imagination of a people, and so be good for the vitality of his nation.” Mailer’s 1960 profile of the then-presidential candidate, written for Esquire magazine, galvanized excitement for Kennedy just days before the election, and its radical writing style changed the face of New Journalism. Now Norman Mailer. JFK. Superman Comes to the Supermarket, a new book from TASCHEN, pairs this classic text with over 300 exhilarating photographs from the campaign trail in an extra-large format. TASCHEN Editor Nina Wiener moderated a discussion between two of the book’s contributors: J. Michael Lennon, Mailer’s biographer, and Lawrence Schiller, award-winning photojournalist and filmmaker and Mailer’s long-time collaborator.
