When Dallas County renovated the first five floors of the Texas School Book Depository into county offices in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Depository's original freight elevator shaft was torn out. The elevators themselves were permanently located on the sixth floor where a small portion of the shaft was preserved. Today, visitors to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza pass by -- and sometimes overlook -- the freight elevators as they enter the exhibition space. The dual elevator pullies can also be seen today in a small, glass-enclosed room on the seventh floor. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
