Enhancements Will Provide Improved Experience for Influx Expected During 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s Assassination

Sixth Floor Museum Begins Refurbishment of Visitors Center

Construction is underway at the north end of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza signaling the first phase of the Museum’s planned improvements in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. The Museum’s Visitors Center, built to provide access to the exhibit on the sixth floor of the former Texas School Book Depository, will undergo significant refurbishment to offer improved ticketing, guest comfort and an enhanced introduction to the core exhibit, John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation.

The redesigned space will feature new ticketing and information service desks, plus an expanded main entry and queuing area that should relieve congestion on busy days. A new exterior canopy will improve Museum visibility, as well as serve as a group entrance and orientation area. Restroom and mechanical upgrades, new floor and window treatments and additional seating will also enhance visitor comfort.

“The Museum and Dallas will receive unprecedented attention this November when we observe the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination,” said Nicola Longford, executive director at The Sixth Floor Museum. “These modifications will enable us to better handle the anticipated crowds and put our best foot forward.”

Refurbishment is slated to be complete by early September 2013. The Museum will remain open throughout construction. Architect for the project is Booziotis & Company Architects; James R. Thompson is the general contractor.

The Sixth Floor Museum is located at 411 Elm Street in Dallas’ West End District. For more information, go to www.jfk.org or call 214.747.6660.
